Adenomyosis is when that same type of tissue grows into the muscular wall of the uterus itself. So instead of being outside the uterus, it is embedded within the uterine muscle. This can make the uterus feel enlarged, tender, and can contribute to heavy bleeding and strong, cramp-like pain.
